With a cast of 14 or 15 actors (I lost count), this dark multimedia comedy from local company Naughty Sailboat (Kafka in Love) offers up a sprawling satire of the stiff-upper-lip British hero à la Biggles/Bulldog Drummond. Sir Captain Jason Bigby is an upper-class twit called into action to engage in some old-fashioned subversion on foreign soil while settling a score with an old nemesis.
It’s all a little too sprawling, really, encompassing a BBC narrator, a psychotic, blood-spattered cross-dresser, a mythical, riddle-spouting monster, and a delectable female double agent with a cadre of acrobatic lady assassins. It’s imaginatively staged, and broadly performed, but not every idea pans out: A snappy hour-long amusement lurks in this oft-cumbersome 75-minute show.
