Four on the Floor

There are a pair of gems in this quartet of comedy sketches from local playwright Dale Watts (Hide and Go Creak, 2009). Namely, veteran fringer Dave Pruden and novice Bluma Levine. She’s a natural, he’s naturally funny and the material rises to meet them in the final act, when they have their lawyers negotiate ground rules for a first date.
But earlier sketches are marred by Jewish stereotypes and inane dialogue. A Jewish salesman peddles papyrus; a dumb hip-hop Romeo and dumber Valspeak-spouting Juliet trade insipid lines in Judge Judy’s court. And a terminally stupid couple visit Sigmund Freud. A running gag about a philanderer almost redeems that sketch. Alas, it’s close, but no cigar.

- Seniors Harlon and Ariana negotiate a first date, with help from Steve and Julia, in The Good Old Days.
