MTC Mainstage (Venue 1), to July 24

In a curious comedy marked by larger-than-life masks, it is still the small things that say so much. For instance, the single men’s jacket laid in elderly Mrs. Fischer’s apartment spins a story about love, loss and the looming Reaper’s touch.

Dark subject matter, that: but this "deathly comedy" by Portland, Ore., duo Wonderheads is far from macabre. Instead it is a sweet and refreshing tale, wordlessly told through thoughtful physical acting and those hauntingly human masks. Indeed, as plucky Mrs. Fischer embarks on her quest to outwit death itself, the handmade masks’ expressions seem to shift. They are static, but never frozen; surreal but graced with subtlety. Add in some light laughs, and Grim and Fischer ends on a note of childlike wonder.

From the official Fringe Festival program:

"Grim & Fischer kills it, literally" - Avenue Magazine.

Death meets his match in Mrs. Fischer, a tenacious granny not ready to breathe her last. In what has been described as live-action Pixar, one woman's fight for survival takes fantastical flight in a showdown with Death himself!
