A hard-boiled comedy from London, Ont., writer/actor Jayson McDonald, Gunpowder follows dotty Det. Phox as he hunts the murderer of, well, Jayson McDonald.
Suspects include: Jayson McDonald (the writer), Jayson McDonald (the director), McDonald’s (the actor) sultry ex-flame, as well as his soused substitute father, salty former acting coach and seriously untalented ex-colleague, a gay magician. All played by Jayson McDonald. Confused? It’s elementary, really.
Murder (not to mention terrible detective skills) isn’t Phox’s only problem. He’s also having some metaphysical (or metafictional) issues regarding his own existence. This all probably isn’t quite as clever as could be, but McDonald’s easy charm and keen comic skills are a treat.
Dashiell Hammett won’t be shaking in his grave for fear of being replaced with lines like, "I can’t stay mad at ducks." Shaking from laughter is another story.
— Barbra Stewart
From the official Fringe Festival guide:
Jayson McDonald (the actor) has been murdered. Can Thom Phox (not the city's worst detective) unravel the mystery before he unravels the narrative?
A solo comedy that finds itself quite thrilling from the creator of "Fall Fair", "Boat Load" and "Giant Invisible Robot".
RECOMMENDED: Mature Audience
