Hey Abbott! Another Classic Comedy Tribute Show

MTC Mainstage (Venue 1), to Friday

In this age of raunchy R-rated laughs, the innocent style of vaudeville comedy duo Abbott and Costello seems quaintly nostalgic. However, as they say, it’s all in the delivery. Cornball lines like “(My girl) had so much bridgework, every time I kissed her, I had to pay a toll” still work when conveyed in the right spirit, and local wiseacres John Chase and Kevin Hamill have the right spirit.

Their obvious affection for A&C’s patter is what carries this genial hour-long production, which has been tailored to fit the fringe’s Big Top theme. Chase has the perfect peeved tone as straight man Abbott, and as Costello, the husky Hamill has both the guileless face and exasperated reactions.

Unfortunately, some of the cast isn’t quite as stellar. Ian Peters’ radio announcer lacks the requisite resonant tones and as Big Top Tim, Tim Beaudry flubs his punchlines more than once. But that Who’s On First routine never gets old.
