Playwright Ryan Gladstone apologized before and after a performance of Hockey Night at the Puck & Pickle Pub for the fact that he and co-star Jon Paterson had not learned their lines. With good reason.
The pair stumbled badly through their portrayal of different pairs of hockey fans watching the 2014 Olympic hockey gold-medal game between Canada and Russia. Much of the problem was not knowing the order of the scenes. This would have deserved a major penalty and a game misconduct — walkouts — if this were not a play about hockey taking place in a real bar in front of a boisterous beer-guzzling crowd.
Hockey Night introduces familiar sets of hockey fans, from grizzled old-timers to geeky poolsters, Canadian and Russian friends and a couple on their first date. Much of the considerable humour was drawn from the game play-by-play and the prominent roles played by Jets players. The description of KHL-bound Alexander Burmistrov dropping to block a shot was met by hoots of derision and laughter, as was the announcement of Roberto Luongo as the starting goalie for Canada.
The good-natured Canadian jersey-wearing actors, who made light of their struggles through the 65-minute game, showed their classic Canuck grit and determination to rally against the formidable foe of unpreparedness. Even Don Cherry (who, strangely, doesn’t get a mention) would salute them as good Canadian boys.
