Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
In A Magic Kingdom
Effective art often approaches us sideways. We can watch a show that doesn’t overtly address emotional issues, and be moved to tears by a sudden insight or pang of recognition.
On the other hand, we can sit through a one-woman show that grapples head-on with loss, suicidal depression and the incomprehensibility of death, and be unmoved and uninvolved.
Celeste Sansregret is the intense Winnipeg actor-writer seen in last year’s Wonderbar! Here, she pours out an autobiography that is too factually specific, too direct to work as art.
The story, which shifts from childhood to recent events, reveals that Sansregret had to cut short her 2008 fringe tour when her engagement to her philandering fiance ended, then her father passed away.
Her suffering and eventual return to hope aren’t filtered or shaped — they’re just laid out. She does deliver some lovely, evocative memories. But her unnatural, exaggerated speaking style does nothing to make her annus horribilis strike meaningful chords in her audience.
