It’s fringe Year 2 for our faux Mario Bros., who use green-screen technology to create this 45-minute journey through “cartoon nexus: the place where all your favourite classic cartoons went when network TV killed Saturday mornings.”

Promising premise, though the locally written five-hander lacked pretty much everything opening night: timing, stage presence and plot. But there were a few laughs from the sparse and friendly crowd, and one young fan summed it up as “awesome and funny.”

If you’re related to anyone in the cast, go. There are a lot of 'toon references, and some clever lines, if you can catch them.

If not, may the Stage Force be with them. Here’s hoping the special effects gel, everyone learns to project their lines as well as Pamela Roz, and the banter sparkles like little Pikachu’s eyes. Otherwise, the biggest laugh will still be a few ill-timed rainbow barfs.

From the Fringe program:

Cartoon nexus: the place where all your favourite classic cartoons went when network TV killed Saturday mornings. An accidental invention has landed the Jumpman Brothers into that dimension of danger, rainbows and double sugar cereal. Is the colourful stranger a villain or a new companion? The Jumpmans can't tell: they can't read emotion on a human who has no moustache. A nostalgic multimedia cartoon adventure in the innovative style of greenscreen theatre!
