Good performances buoy a weak plot in this not-so-dark comedy by Winnipegger Eileen Longfield.
We first meet June (Casey Shapira) as a slightly unbalanced little girl babbling to her knit monkey about monsters under her bed until her mother Gwen (Cheryl Soluk) rescues her. We next meet her as a neurotic 20-something babbling to herself about her neighbour, who likes to parade naked in front of his window, until her mother rescues her. And that’s about it.
Shapira transforms very impressively from a little girl to an adult version of the character, but it is Soluk who steals the show as the busybody mom with a surprising lusty streak. A little more storyline or character growth would’ve added immensely to these promising characters.
Not a bad view, worth a look — but you’ll probably find yourself looking elsewhere.
