Kafka in Love

This three-chapter dark comedy thankfully belies its inauspicious intro of black-clad, masked actors acrobatically cavorting around the stage with props. From there, the cast of 10 young Winnipeg performers takes the work on an upswing.
Telling “the same story of entrapment, self-delusion and love” in three different ways, Kafka in Love begins with prissy sad-sack Ulrich locked in a closet talking to a five-dollar bill, moves on to a Vladimir-and-Estragon-meet-Rosencrantz-and-Guildenstern-in-a-nuclear-holocaust romp and finally finds Kafka in an upside-down Metamorphosis, where everyone but Gregor wakes up as a cockroach.
The abyss may always be at the door in these slightly overlong tales, but Kafka in Love never succumbs to the weight of its own artiness. Puppets, movement and keen comedic performances are intertwined to fine effect.
