Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
This show is billed as “longform improv,” but it isn’t really. It’s just that instead of taking audience suggestions for each sketch, the two Vancouver-based improvisers take a single suggestion, riff on it for a minute or two and then meander aimlessly through a series of other sketches. Really good improv is a thrilling display of focus, trust and co-operation between actors. This was more like a competition to see which improviser could be more bizarre.
They got off to a promising start with the story of a boy/dental messiah who resembles “Montreal spiced meat.” It might have been interesting if they’d truly attempted a “longform improv” on that topic. Instead though, they changed scenes, characters and accents at random intervals. Every improv show has highs and lows. While this show had its flashes of brilliance, it’s mostly a mess.
