Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Molly
The final chapter of James Joyce’s Ulysses is an eight-run-on-sentence, stream-of-consciousness soliloquy from Molly Bloom, the wife of the 1921 novel’s hero, Leopold Bloom. As adapted and directed by fringe star Peter McGarry of Eyewitness Theatre, Molly comments with a refreshing sexual frankness, startling for its day, on her suspicions about her husband’s extramarital affairs as well as her own search for love.

Clad in only her white nightdress, the 32-year-old Molly emerges from her bed beside a sleeping Leopold, asking, "Why can’t you kiss a man before you marry them?" For the next hour she muses about love, the pleasure men gain from a woman’s body and why Leopold kisses her bottom. Her views are hardly graphic by contemporary standards but were rarely expressed in public in Victorian Dublin.
Carly Tarett, who did double duty in Lysistrata and The Importance of Being Earnest last fringe festival, portrays Molly with an appealing freshness, genuineness and cheek. Her breathy voice features an Irish accent that never wavers. More importantly, she makes what for many of us is a first encounter with the unreadable Ulysses a positive experience.

From the official Fringe Festival guide:
In association with EYEWITNESS THEATRE.
Molly is the feisty, outrageous wife in James Joyce’s celebrated and scandalous novel Ulysses, which was banned in Europe until 1963.
Molly is brought to life by Carly Tarett (Lampito from Lysistrata - Winnipeg 2009 Best of Fest) in this adaptation, exploring the intricate feelings, desires and secret longings of a very special femme fatale!
