Rich Orloff’s Nothing Serious is composed of three short but sweet sketches. In fact, it came in 10 minutes under its scheduled 45.
In Playwriting 101, a jumper and a Good Samaritan play out the same scene over and over again, directed by a teacher who is attempting to illustrate what sets apart good writing (conflict isn’t the same as arguing!) from bad (show, don’t tell!). In the excellent Eve and Adam, the script is flipped; Adam originates from snarky, sassy Eve’s rib, God is a woman and the payoff is hilarious. In Oh My God, It’s Another Play — which, incidentally, is what all fringe reviewers murmur to themselves at least once during the 12-day run — a motley crew of actors is assembled; we follow them from table read to curtain call.
The writing is smart. But is it funny? Sometimes. Several jokes fell flat owing to their delivery. As a whole, the show was uneven and the last sketch was the weakest; I found myself wishing that the whole play had been Eve and Adam instead of the same old clichés about playwrights and actors. Which perhaps was the point. In that case, it’s brilliant.
