Local collective Naughty Sailboat’s latest fringe entry boasts an impressive playwright in Ethan Coen — best known as one-half of award-winning filmmakers the Coen brothers — but his off-Broadway entry Offices is worlds away from the scripts of movies like Fargo and The Big Lebowski.

The too-long 90-minute show consists of several vignettes about the fear, loathing, apathy and paranoia that can make up the day-to-day lives of white-collar drones.

The six-member cast is uniformly excellent, but are let down by the sketches, which feature some rapid-fire dialogue and the occasional laugh before wrapping up with unsatisfying conclusions. (Cutting the pointless Sawbones bit would shave off some time.)

Better than the skits are the video/still-photo segues that appear to be original work by the Winnipeg group. With a few more of those, Naughty Sailboat could have next year’s fringe hit on its hands.

— Rob Williams

From the Fringe program:

Naughty Sailboat of Almost an Evening ("Definitely the best ensemble group show on the circuit" - Jenny Revue, "Powerhouse performances" 4 Stars - Winnipeg Free Press, 4 Stars - CBC) returns to the darkly hilarious world of Ethan Coen, Academy Award winner and co-creator of Fargo and The Big Lebowski.

Mirth, adventure and the anti-social art of hiring and firing. It's all in a day's work.
