One Dollar & The Key
Despite highfalutin language in the fringe program that describes The Key portion of this double bill as a stichomythic, dada-like comedy, it’s actually reasonably entertaining. Four women engage in a rapid-fire exchange of mix-and-match quotes about love and lust from Shakespeare’s plays, offering romantic advice, making raunchy confessions and generally coming off as freakishly eloquent girlfriends. Too bad The Key is so short it sets up One Dollar as the main attraction. Lower your expectations. When eight commedia dell’arte actors fight over a found dollar bill, they play on a loose theme — money equals power — but this comedy comes up a few cents short. Wisely, the bill has been trimmed to 50 minutes from the 75 advertised.
