Winnipeg’s Outside Joke troupe and its enthusiastic musical improv is back at the fringe for another year. On a sold-out opening night, the suggestions of spitballs and an old guitar at a garage sale morphed into an hour-long family melodrama, spiced up with giggles about chocolate mushroom caps, toilet babies and chicken nuggets that never decompose.

If These Walls Could Talk was the best of the ersatz songs — what Outside Joke lack in script, they make up for in sheer belting-it-out ability — and odd, foreign home-buying traditions earned a few laughs.

The troupe was missing two of its members on Wednesday night, and when they return, they’ll get more laughs and fewer awkward moments when the characters onstage outnumber the actors.

— Alan Small
