In the crowded market of fringe improv shows, every troupe needs a gimmick. Winnipeg’s Outside Joke promises to let us “be the captain,” (although what improv show doesn’t take its cues from the audience?) but the real draw is that they improvise an hour-long original musical each and every time they perform.

In this one, the audience shout-out “drumstick” led to the spontaneous creation of the well-plotted story of drummer Wayne, his band Calypso Hippo and his pregnant wife. Each of the five cast members has his/her moments of hilarity, though not all of them were strong singers. If tight-and-witty improv is what you’re after at this year’s fringe, you could do worse. It’s unlikely, however, that we’ll be seeing too many improvised musicals on Broadway any time soon.

— Ben Wiebe

From the Fringe program:

Outside Joke performs musically driven improvisation with YOU at the helm! We'll take you on a new adventure every show, complete with improvised songs. An Outside Joke show is high-energy, often absurd, and always entertaining. Bring your friends: you're going to want to see this.
