Shaw Performing Arts Centre (Venue 9), to Sunday

For everyone who could change the world, if only they could get out of bed: this show’s for you.

It may not be very flattering, however. In this ensemble musical, a young Edmonton troupe spins tunes by off-Broadway composers Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk into a 60-minute skewering of vapid youth-oriented consumer culture.

The gang’s all here: snooty rich girls and slackers, lovers and indiscriminate drinkers. At first, the songs are great for some laughs and a few deeper thoughts. But without a real story or even well-defined characters, the message quickly gets repetitive, and the show loses its spark.

Trimming even four songs would have made the show tighter and brighter. At least the appealing and energetic seven-member cast keeps the Party going: stage dynamo Molly Wilson is a soulful standout, and Corben Kushneryk is a comic riot as a shlubby slacker.
