Princess Dee: The Princess Diana Story Retold
Aqua Books (Venue 20), to July 23
We all know the storybook romance of the dashing Prince Charles and the pretty young commoner he wooed, wed and ultimately abandoned.
But Manchester playwright and sole performer Carly Tarett gives her 60-minute drama a cheeky twist, transplanting the rulers of the British empire to a housing project in Brittania, with ‘Queenie’ as the chain-smoking kingpin of The Firm.
It’s a great concept, and Tarett ably portrays more than a half-dozen toughies from the ’ hood (with nothing but a chair and a hot-pink mini wedding dress) — from the vulgar, swaggering Charlie Windsor to the wide-eyed Dee herself, slowly unravelling in a loveless marriage. It’s a little long on bulimia, but weaves some sly truths amid a gritty “reality” of bars, bookies and dirt bikes (no polo ponies for our Charlie). Very cool venue, to boot.

From the official Fringe Festival program:
Dee has caught the eye of Charlie, the greatest catch at the Britannia housing project. His powerful, oddball family may be off-putting, but wedding bells are in the air …
