Rudolf Rocker Cultural Centre (Venue 21), to July 27

Winnipeg’s This Reality Theatre Company is getting a jump on next year’s Master Playwright Festival with its Quickies With Chekhov.

In anticipation of ChekhovFest 2014, five young actors perform vignettes from six of the Russian writer’s short stories in one hour. They display a confidence with the material, especially as male and female actors seamlessly switch playing Klotchkov’s hard-done-by girlfriend in Anyuta. Director Lia Zarrillo ups the visual interest in At the Barber’s with scenes on both sides of the stage mirroring each other.

Not every piece compels and why this six-pack of playlets were presented together is not apparent, but the quickies do whet the appetite of theatre-goers for more substantial Chekhov next January.

From the Fringe program:

Hatched from the subtle and dark words of one of the greatest short story writers of all time comes Quickies With Chekhov, a series of vignettes depicting the brevity and wit of Anton Chekhov. A broken-hearted barber, a silver-tongued secretary, a downtrodden muse— through lenses dark and facetious, these characters come to life in a variety of adaptations. Six stories. Five actors. One Chekhov.
