Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Improv is perhaps the most frightening of performance genres. A singer is off-key? An audience can turn a blind ear. An actor misses a line, a stage manager calls it out. Even a juggler with a bad case of the dropsies can go on with the show.
But when improv doesn’t work, it’s just painful for everyone. Such is the case with Rumble Pak’s offering early in its seven-performance run at the fringe.
It’s not that the three actors who make up Rumble Pak — Adam Drory, Tristen Foy and Lukas Conway — didn’t have their moments. There were some fine monkey noises. The three also nail their portrayal of old guys sitting on a porch. But these moments are few and far between, just plain too little to carry a 45-minute performance.
The good news? This troupe builds each performance from audience suggestions. Each night is a whole new ball game.
