Shelby Bond- People Pleaser
Shelby Bond announces himself as a man addicted to addicts, and in this solo romp the longtime Winnipeg fringe friend wanders through the attics of his rescuer complex.
There was a toxic relationship built around her drinking, you see, and with his easy charm, Bond sandwiches comedic monologues around a wrenching tale of co-dependency.
It’s mostly an engrossing performance, and Bond is always likable, but the show could use a little bit more focus. Instead, he juggles in a little something for everyone, and not all of it works.
The heartfelt unravelling of the relationship narrative does; so, too, does his effortless interactivity with the audience.
But his schlocky recurring caricature of a German psychoanalyst sticks out oddly, and it’s not really funny. Still, there are good-natured laughs and some gentle insight into emotional dependence to be had.

From the Fringe program:
They say that tragedy plus time equals comedy, and American comic Shelby Bond has waited long enough.
After years of trying to fix addicts, cutters and manically depressed girlfriends, Bond, a self-confessed people pleaser, has decided that the least they can do is let him write a show about it. Shelby tells stories about his life that will make you feel better about yours.
"Bond's charm is indisputable, and his nice-guy persona makes his irreverent humour all the more enjoyable." - VUE Weekly
