This sequel to ONEymoon from Toronto’s Christel Bartelse picks up on the story of one woman’s love affair with herself. After taking herself off the market and officially marrying herself, our heroine picks up her story on her three-year anniversary, as friends and family find excuses to not show up to her strenuously celebratory dinner.
Bartelse is costumed to look like Lucy-without-Desi, a look embellished by some clever retro set design suggestive of paper doll cut-outs.
This manic (not to say desperate) one-hour comedy suffered a series of miscues on its first night, but even when running smoothly, there is the sense the story’s being unnecessarily padded. Bartelse is clearly a gifted clown, but honey, it’s time to move on.
