Shaw Performing Arts Centre (MTYP) (Venue 9), to Saturday

This big, sprawling parody of American Idol features seven contestants (most culled from past incarnations of the show, each representing a bold-letter stereotype), three judges, a host and a large amount of pre-taped content, all adding up to 90 minutes of good stupid fun.

A Big Brother component has all seven would-be musical theatre idols obliged to live together for six months. (“We know they can sing in harmony but can they live in harmony?” intones the show’s in-love-with-himself host.) And there’s a Survivor element (“Bigger. Harder. Cheaper.”) as each participant must prove his or her dramatic chops uttering movie catchphrases.

Lip service to musical theatre gives way to musical content from the realm of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, but it’s all so energetically done, there’s scant reason for complaint.
