There’s a lot to admire in this international experiment in unspoken co-operation. Charismatic Colombians Daniel Orrantia and Felipe Ortiz show an extraordinary amount of simpatico as they improv-mime linked scenes from audience suggestions. The only sound for most of 60 minutes is the audio backdrop painted by Winnipeg DJ Mama Cutsworth (Sarah Michaelson).

It’s not perfect. There are stretches when the audience (and often the other collaborators) silently struggle to understand what’s happening onstage. But when the three artists click and moments come into crystal-clear focus, clever scene work glows just a bit brighter than usual. It’s an inspired, inspiring feat.

It’ll leave you speechless, too.

From the Fringe program:

Director: Sarah Michaelson, Daniel Orrantia, Felipe Ortiz

Cast: Sarah Michaelson, Daniel Orrantia, Felipe Ortiz

Based on physical theatre, clown techniques and long-form improv, Speechless lives at the intersection of familiar and surreal. The magic comes from one key element: no words are used. Instead, the human form and music unfold into beautiful, intertwining stories.

Elements inspired by Buster Keaton's physicality or the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez are wrapped inside rich musical soundscapes.

Featuring Colombia's Felipe Ortiz and Daniel Orrantia with Canadian DJ Mama Cutsworth.

Audience Classification: General

Length: 60 mins.
