Spin the Rascal

Red River College (Venue 11), to July 23

The Crosseyed Rascals have enough energy, enthusiasm and team spirit to run an improv marathon relay. Unfortunately, they’re a little weak in the exchange zone: the comedic baton either gets fumbled at a critical moment, or else the receiver decides to run around in circles.

Finding the funny in short-form improv is a sprint. And while it takes a lot of juice to be simultaneously fast, funny and squeaky clean, this likeable Winnipeg foursome get winded before they get anywhere near a clever comeback or anything resembling a punchline.

While the Rascals didn’t spin many laughs out of the audience suggestions and game show-style interchanges that make up this 60-minute set, there were some.

Julie Horbal can be quick and cheeky and had some funny lines in a bit about a no-holds-barred vacumming competition, while the gangly, rubber-faced Mitch Krohn lent some goofy, physical humour to a game where audience volunteers became puppet masters.
