The Courier

In an impressive 45-minute monologue, local actor Toby Hughes gives a standout performance as a Ukrainian-born Mennonite drafted into the German army as a courier during the Second World War.

The 20-something Hughes, best known for his comedy shtick with the musical improv troupe Outside Joke, evokes both our sympathy and disdain as the anxious young man whose character is formed by history and circumstance.

Premièred circa 1987, this was the first produced script by Winnipeg-born Vern Thiessen, now among the country’s leading playwrights.

The strength of this psychologically intense production, which Thiessen directs, is probably aided by the claustrophobic nature of the small Artspace venue.

From the Fringe program:

Spring 1945: occupied Czechoslovakia. David Dyck, a young courier in Hitler's army, must decide whether to open a restricted letter and face the truth, or remain ignorant and face death.

A powerful one-man show featuring Toby Hughes and directed by the playwright, Vern Thiessen.
