Storyteller Jeff Culbert grew up in Lucan, Ont., immersed in the small town’s history, including the infamous Donnelly murders of 1880. In the one-man production The Donnelly Sideshow, he adopts the persona of Johnny O’Connor, the boy who witnessed the atrocity and lived.
The Donnelly murders were once the talk of the entire country. And while there were always whispers about who did it and whether the Donnellys had it coming, it is certain that justice was never served through the trials of the accused or the subsequent stories. With guitar in hand and his folksy (but never corny) manner, the easygoing Culbert draws the audience in with the whole story and does a fine job of detailing the fascinating events, right from the time the Donnellys settled in Canada to the night of the brutal murders.
