Seattle’s Christopher Bange, perhaps best known for The Excursionists, is back with the story of Mr. Fuzzy, a Neil Diamond-loving magician who is unlucky in love and teased for being fat. This review is tainted because I was hauled up on stage to play Mr. Fuzzy’s almost-girlfriend. We played footsie and went on a roller-coaster ride.
Bange, floppy-haired and endearing, breaks up Mr. Fuzzy’s tale with old-school magic tricks involving cards and hoops and rope. They are still fascinating, done with a kind of courtly style that makes them look effortless. The show falters, though, with the Neil Diamond vocal interludes that are not funny enough and feel like filler. And, my prolonged onstage embarrassment aside, I wanted Bange to pick up the pace just a little.
