The Good Thief
Lanky Australian actor Allan Girod is thoroughly convincing as the title character in Irish playwright Conor McPherson’s 1994 work about the human capacity for evil-doing.
In fact, his brogue sounds so authentic, and so impenetrable at times, you wish you could push the “subtitles” button on your DVD remote.
The “good thief” in this 60-minute one-man show is a 40-ish Dublin wiseguy who kidnaps a woman and her young daughter after a routine act of thuggery goes wrong. Thematically the piece contains echoes of the best gangster dramas, in that it dares you to empathize with a man whose life choices have led him down the wrong path.
Because it moves so quickly, the plot line is hard to follow. But McPherson’s narrative drive and Girod’s performance, underscored by his emotional nakedness at the end, keep you in suspense.

From the official Fringe Festival program:
From internationally acclaimed Conor McPherson comes the tale of a hapless Dublin hardman who becomes a fugitive for kidnapping and murder after a routine job goes awry.
Tragedy, lurid violence and dark Irish wit weave an engaging plot that teeters on the edge of numerous possible outcomes.
