Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Verbatim transcripts of reality shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are routinely played for comedy on The Tonight Show, so it’s not a stretch to consider an improv version might yield some laughs. But the four-person local improv troupe the Couriers give themselves a major hurdle by casting one lucky — or unlucky — member of the audience as a competitor.
Incorporating written real-life dating anecdotes from the audience for additional inspiration, the hour-long show still stalls when sticking close to Bachelorette formula, particularly in painfully awkward, post-date interview segments. Even the more seasoned improv performers can’t seem to think of anything to say. When a non-professional is thrown in the mix, one senses potential for comedy, but on its opening night, it didn’t really get delivered.
If nothing else, The (Improvised) Bachelorette demonstrates why so-called “reality shows” are usually scripted.
