This captivating comedy uses sound and lighting effects to whisk an uptight scientist and an 11-year-old girl to realms as diverse as a jungle, a war zone, the moon and the stage of a stadium rock concert. It’s a witty, hour-long adventure, activated by a radio that disrupts space and time when its tuning knob is twiddled.

Wonderheads, the Oregon-based silent performers known for Grim & Fischer and Loon, wear head-covering masks. The exaggerated faces themselves don’t move. Yet they magnify, in a mysteriously effective way, the thoughts and emotions that are beautifully conveyed through body language. You could almost swear you do see their expressions change.

Kate Braidwood is the standout as the endearing girl. She and the scientist acquire a surprising friend who makes their travels funnier, more touching and more wondrous. The show takes a small misstep with a pandering movie reference. But whether you’re a parent with a school-age child or just a grown-up who needs reminding that the universe is awesome, you’ll be delighted by Wonderheads.
