If you like your fringe with a slice of sleight-of-hand, look no further than Things That Never Happen. Vancouver’s Travis Bernhardt is a skilled magician and refreshingly low-key performer who combines wicked card tricks, wacky optical illusions and even a wink of mind-reading in the mix.
Beyond the magic itself, which is finely honed, Bernhardt’s style is polished yet unpretentious. His stage patter is conversational and peppered with self-deprecating humour, discussing the nerdiness of magic and the fact that he did once blow the big trick of the show. He’s a clever performer who knows how to use his likability to its greatest advantage.
Ultimately, though, it’s all about the magic, and Bernhardt’s style and sensibility allow the magic to shine in its own right, making Things That Never Happen, well, pure magic.
