Til Death Do We Part: The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a One-Woman Show
In this new Ryan Gladstone comedy, each one of Henry VIII’s six dead wives drops screaming into some waiting room near the Pearly Gates. Only one can be the king’s consort in heaven and it is left to them to quarrel among themselves as to who is his true love.
Monster Theatre veteran Tara Travis plays all the wives, as well as Henry, in one of the most impressive acting feats in the festival. Six-way conversations — it’s no help when three of the characters have different spellings of the name Catherine — can be confusing, but Travis, who belongs in their midst as the scream queen, finds distinctive physical poses and accents to differentiate each. Anne Boleyn is easiest to characterize because only her head made it to the afterlife.
Masterpiece Theatre lovers will be entertained royally with the bonus that the wives get even with Henry for all eternity.
