One part teen drama, one part relationship study and another part avant-garde theatre, Tough! is a park-bench tale about a young relationship and its unexpected uterine side-effect.

Also unexpected is the 1993 George F. Walker play’s new staging, first tested at a Toronto theatre. Nine actors inhabit the three roles simultaneously: there are four Bobbys, three Tinas, and two Jills onstage for the entire play, rotating through speaking duties.

It was trippy-cool, especially when the well-rehearsed teen cast delivered lines in perfect unison. It also added momentum to what can be a repetitively melodramatic play, though the audience was still shuffling uncomfortably by the 75-minute mark.

The nine actors are clearly passionate about Tough!, and brought loads of moxie to their shared roles. Keegan Steele stood out in The Zoo Story and does here again; unfortunately, some of the female cast got their tone dial stuck on “shrill.” Twiddle that knob down a bit, and Tough! will be a gentler ride.
