After meeting Leonard Cohen’s muses, you’ll venture west — "As Neil Young seeks a heart of gold/Lenny Breau asks for whom bells tolled" and Joni Mitchell tries to find her way back to the garden.

Your guide will be Victoria guitar virtuoso Colin Godbout, who can produce an entire rhythm section from a single six-stringed instrument. You’ll spend the hour listening to gorgeous, jazz-infused renderings of Canada’s musical landscape (circa 1969).

If that jibes with your idea of a musical blast from the past, you’ll enjoy the journey. But don’t expect much commentary: aside from his one-line intros, Godbout has almost no interaction with the audience. He should consider weaving in a little storytelling to justify his billing as musical theatre.

TransCanada ’69 isn’t a very fringe-y trip, but given the amount of talent and great tunes included in the fare, it’s practically a free ride.
