Wild Abandon

An egg — yes, an unhatched egg in a basket — powerfully symbolizes the dream of a happy life for Steve, the young man who lays bare his loneliness and longing in this raw, darkly truthful solo by Governor General’s Award winner Daniel MacIvor.
Ottawa’s hefty Zach Counsils (Bat Boy: the musical) holds nothing back in his furious, funny, poignant portrayal of Steve. The 50-minute show is really a piece of existential philosophy, voicing the impossibility of penetrating the “shell” of another human and the question, “What is everybody waiting for?”
Its greatest satisfaction comes in MacIvor’s linked-up metaphors. The title Wild Abandon suggests both our drive to lose ourselves in the void, and the atheist’s sense of being abandoned — profoundly alone.
