A lot of young writers pass through the rite of writing a romantic comedy, with its coffee-shop setting, broad characters, affected dialogue and gung-ho delivery. C’est la vie.

Winnipeg’s Megan Andres actually does better than most, distinguishing herself writing and acting in the 75-minute four-hander. Effectively experimenting with time and overlapping dialogue, her usual suspects (confused young man, goofball buddy, pretty party girl, quiet roommate) have more depth and appeal than normal. And her best playwriting decision clearly separates her script from the pack.

A woman given agency in a rom-com? Be still my heart.

But the show also suffers the regular baggage, namely over-earnest delivery of stereotypical lines. A gentle note to the male lead: that’s not what drunk babble sounds like. More beer-tent research is prescribed.

Rom-com fans should line up for Only Just... Everyone else should line up for Andres’ next piece.

"Once upon a time…they lived happily ever after..."

Isaac always thought he knew how his story should go. Now it seems he has all the pieces in place to make life and love turn out just the way they should. But sometimes "ideal" and "real" are two very different worlds.

A fast-paced, honest and at times uncomfortable rollercoaster of a dramedy exploring love, friendship and thwarted dreams.
