Bend down, help someone up

Bison athletes have hearts in the right place come Christmas time

  • Print

An old saying has it that "a good exercise for the heart is to bend down and help another up."

These are words to live by for athletes from the University of Manitoba Bisons sports programs. During the last five days, over 80 athletes from the nine programs volunteered at Siloam Mission preparing food, serving patrons and spreading holiday cheer.

It was the seventh straight year that Bisons student athletes have volunteered at Siloam Mission during the holiday season. How did they fit this in between training for their teams, working their part-time jobs and studying for exams?

"I got up early and went there in the morning, my exam wasn't until after lunch," said Chantal DeSpiegelaere, a member of the Bisons women's hockey team who is in her third year as student co-ordinator of the Bisons volunteers.

"For all of us, coming to Siloam is an eye-opener. You don't quite realize there's a lot of people around us that don't have the opportunities we have. It humbles you and reminds you that we are so fortunate to have what we have and how special it is that we get to do what we do every day."

DeSpiegelaere said helping out at Siloam is just one of the many volunteer community initiatives Bisons athletes participate in.

"Our community supports us so much, this is a way of helping others and we all get a lot out of it," she said. "And not just Siloam needs help. There are a lot of other things that need help, so do anything you can do."

DeSpiegelaere said she is in awe of the fighting spirits in the people she has met at Siloam.

"Last year, we (Bisons women's hockey) were having a pretty good season and this one man we talked to, he knew what was happening in our games, how we were doing, our schedule, the standings, I was just taken aback," DeSpiegelaere said. "He was fighting every day for survival and yet he was interested in how we were doing in hockey. I was so proud to be part of something that he could have to take his mind off his troubles, even for a minute."

Mike Duerksen, the Siloam Mission communications coordinator, said Siloam is grateful to have the Bisons on board.

"Especially around Christmas time, a lot of people who use our services may not have good memories from Christmas or they have a lot of Christmases that they wish they could just forget," he said. "Part of what we try to do around Christmas is create new memories, create a sense of community and sense of home in this place and part of that is our volunteers who come in."

He said seeing young people volunteering at Siloam means a lot to the patrons.

"It shows them that there are young people out there that care," Duerksen said. "The way we see it, young people like the Bisons students who are volunteering here are the future of the city and the future is in good hands."

The Free Press sports department is inviting you to share what you can in support of the Christmas Cheer Board, and we'll work altogether to bring hampers to needy families at this special time of year.

The Cheer Board needs to raise $840,000 to break even this year. Last year, with your help, our Spirit of Christmas campaign was able to contribute $149,432 to The Christmas Cheer Board. We really need your help again. Please join us and send your donations to The Spirit of Christmas, c/o Winnipeg Free Press, 1355 Mountain Ave., Winnipeg, R2X 3B6.
