Glendale Council approves Coyotes lease
GLENDALE, Az. - Tuesday night’s last gasp vote did not go the way many Winnipeggers were hoping and the Phoenix Coyotes will remain in Arizona.
The City of Glendale approved a lease that will pay potential new owner Matthew Hulsizer $197 million over the next six years to buy and operate the team at Jobing.com Arena.
Hulsizer will now attempt to close a sale of the Coyotes with the NHL at a purchase price of $170 million.
After two hours of presentations from Glendale employees and a councillor question and answer period, 45 minutes of citizen testimonials followed.
The testimonials included angry rants from concerned taxpayers to teary pleas of save the Coyotes.
Some four hours into the proceedings Mayor Elaine Scruggs called for a vote and it passed 5-2 in favour of ratifying the lease.
