Thrashers name game
Speculation rife over moniker if NHL team moves to Winnipeg
The NHL’s return to Winnipeg should be finalized within the next two days, Mayor Sam Katz said Tuesday, but a statement about the team name has been contested by those working to bring the NHL back to the city.
True North Sports & Entertainment remains in discussions with the owners of the Atlanta Thrashers about acquiring the Georgia NHL team and moving it to Winnipeg.
Katz said Tuesday he expects to see a resolution today or Thursday.
"I fully expect we’ll have an answer within the next 48 hours," said Katz, who is not involved in the negotiations.
Katz also claimed the name of the team will not be the Jets, but True North says no decision has been made on the name.
True North communications director Scott Brown confirmed the name-game debate is just that, a game. "He's speculating," Brown told the Free Press, referring to the mayor's comments on "the Jets" moniker.
