Marcelino takes Tyndall Park

Ted Marcelino and the NDP stormed to an easy victory in the new riding of Tyndall Park in northwest Winnipeg.

Marcelino swept the riding, winning most of the 38 polls and winning them handily over his closest rival, Liberal Roldan Sevillano.

The crowd of Marcelino supporters, packed into a small loading dock in the Inkster Industrial Park, erupted into cheers of "we want Ted" as riding results were reported.

"Boy, this is an exciting moment," said Ben Bansal, a campaign volunteer. "We knew we were going to win at six o'clock. I just had a feeling from all the hard work we put in."

Marcelino credtited a hard-working team of volunteers from across the new riding for the victory, adding many wrongly believed the highly touted Liberal machine would steal this riding.

"I'm elated with the victory," Marcelino told reporters before thanking his supporters. "The people of Tyndall Park have spoken."

The election featured a first for Manitoba politics -- three Filipino-Canadian candidates running for the same seat in the provincial election. Sevillano, 26, was Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux's assistant.

Marcelino is the brother-in-law of NDP cabinet minister Flor Marcelino, who ran in the new Logan riding.

Cris Aglugub was the NDP MLA for The Maples from 1999 to 2007 but lost the party's nomination that year. This time around he ran as a Tory. He finished a distant third.

Marcelino was a Canada Revenue Agency clerk and worked as a lawyer in the Philippines.
