Selby victorious in Southdale

  • Print

New Democrat Erin Selby proved her first time win in the Tory stronghold of Southdale was no fluke. She did it again Tuesday night.

It was a close race for much of the evening but Selby, like her party, prevailed.

"It feels fantastic," Selby said, at her party headquarters in a family restaurant.

She said Manitobans felt comfortable with the NDP.

"Going door to door, I didn't feel a lot of appetite for change. The NDP has consistently renewed itself, bringing in new people with new ideas."

Southdale was considered a bellwether riding. It was one the Tories had to win if they hoped to form the next government. Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen visited the riding no fewer than four times during the campaign.

But former television anchor, Selby, held on to defeat Tory Judy Eastman, a real estate appraiser and single mom.

Selby won despite seeing Windsor Park, an NDP-friendly neighbourhood, become part of Radisson riding. The wild card in the riding was new subdivision of Sage Creek, home to many young families.
