Both Lord Roberts and Fort Garry voted NDP in the 2007 election but Lord Roberts, from which the riding draws more than half its new boundaries, has been more solidly NDP than Fort Garry.
In fact the Fort Garry riding voted NDP for the first time ever only in 2003. It was mainly a Tory riding prior to that.
Lord Roberts has always been held by the NDP. Lord Roberts’ incumbent Diane McGifford (who won in 2007 by more than 3,100 votes) has decided to retire.
Fort Garry-incumbent Kerri Irvin-Ross chose to run in the new riding of Fort Richmond.
It leaves this riding without an incumbent, and as such it is a target riding for the Conservatives.
