Located in a northern central pocket of Winnipeg, Kildonan stretches to the city limits at its northern boundary, is west of the Red River and east of McPhillips Street.
It includes all or parts of the communities of Seven Oaks, Jefferson, Garden City and West Kildonan.
This is an ethnically diverse riding with nearly a quarter of the population being immigrants to Canada. Ukrainian and Jewish are the two largest distinct populations.
It has a large senior citizen contingent (nearly one in five residents are over 65) and a relatively small aboriginal population.
It has a median income above the provincial average but more than one in 10 residents lives under the poverty line.
Manufacturing is its number one industry.
Median age: 41.1
Immigrants: 24.4 per cent
Aboriginal population: 5.8 per cent
Living in poverty: 13.7 per cent
Median income: $27,002
Kildonan has been held by the NDP for all but six years since the riding was created in 1958.
Dave Chomiak, a popular cabinet minister, has been the NDP MLA since 1990 is one of the longest sitting MLAs in the legislature now. He is running again in 2011.
A combination of his personal popularity and the NDP brand’s popularity in this riding serve to keep this riding off the target lists of either the Tories or the Liberals.
