St. Paul

St. Paul is a new riding rejigged mostly from the old riding of Springfield. It sits on the northeast corner of Winnipeg and includes the bedroom communities of East St. Paul, West St. Paul, Birds Hill, Dugald and Oakbank.

The riding has the smallest First Nations population of any riding in the entire province.

It is among the most affluent of the ridings in Manitoba, with a median income nearly $9,000 higher than the provincial median income and the seventh best in the province.

It has the lowest after-tax poverty rate.

Although more than one in 10 residents are immigrants to Canada, most of them have been here for quite some time.

Fewer than two per cent arrived in the past five years, the lowest percentage in the province.

Manufacturing is the number one employer.

Politics

The old riding of Springfield has been held by all three major parties in the last half century, but the Tories have been the winners for the last two decades.

Ron Schuler has held this riding for the Tories since 1999 and won it quite handily in 2007 by more than 2,500 votes.
