The Maples

Located in the northwestern corner of the city of Winnipeg, The Maples is a pretty middle- and upper-middle class suburban riding taking in the communities of The Maples, Inkster Gardens, Meadows West and Amber Trails.

Its boundaries changed pretty significantly for this election, adding large parts of what used to be the Inkster riding.

Politics

The Maples became a riding just over 20 years ago. It was a Liberal riding for its first decade and has been NDP for the last decade.

The NDP held on here easily in 2007 despite some party infighting that saw then incumbent MLA Chris Aglugub defeated for the NDP nomination by Mohinder Saran.

The discord had other parties thinking they might step in for the win, but Saran won by more than 1,700 votes.

2007 results

Mohinder Saran, NDP 3,617

Lou Fernandez, PC 1,895

Pritam Bar, LIB 928

Turnout: 55.05 per cent
