Koats for Kids heats up!

Dipping temperatures are a chilly reminder that winter is a downright tough season to weather if you’re not adequately prepared or equipped – especially for children. At best, kids are driven inside and isolated from friends and playmates. At worst, they risk serious injury and illness from exposure.

That’s why United Way’s Koats for Kids program is so important. Last week, United Way and our partners launched the 21st season of Koats for Kids with a "mitten cutting" ceremony at the new Koats for Kids Volunteer Centre at 3172 Portage Avenue. Special thanks to the City of Winnipeg for providing the space, which will make it possible to expand the program further, in order to keep up with demand for new and gently-used children’s outerwear.

Also in demand this week were devotees of United Way and Blue Bomber safety #31 Ian Logan. It all started when Winnipeg Free Press blogger (and HOT103 host) Ace Burpee promised to donate $500 to United Way if Ian became the first CFL player to boast 1,000 Twitter followers.

Winnipeggers, you made it happen and Ace and Ian each chipped in to hold up their end of the bargain! Congratulations Winnipeg and thank you Ian and Ace for your commitment to lasting change and better lives through United Way! Find out more about the Twitter Challenge here.

It’s all about participation this year! And it’s all about participation at United Way’s Report Session 3 on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at Red River College. Find out where we’re at in our annual fundraising campaign as a result of Winnipeggers’ generosity and participation. Hope to see you then!
