Pipers truly champs of high school hockey
The John Taylor Pipers have completed the sweep, becoming just the third school in Manitoba history to win both the Winnipeg High School Hockey League championship and the provincial title.
The Pipers triumphed Monday night in a 3-1 victory against the Oak Park Raiders at the St. James Civic Centre, holding strong during a brisk game that frequently saw the Raiders control the pace.
The Pipers bent but did not break, coming back to open scoring just over four minutes into the third period when Graham Philp knocked in a rebound from a Tyler Kemball shot past Raiders goaltender Tyler Dodd.
Oak Park returned fire under three minutes later to tie the game, when Robbie Cairns slipped the puck past Pipers goalie Brett Bigourdin during a scramble by the net. Dylan Zeke and Jeremy Hope drew assists.
The game threatened to go into overtime, but for a holding penalty to Raiders captain Tyson Bannatyne after he hauled down Pipers forward Nicholas Pierce with 2:59 left in regulation.
The Pipers capitalized on the ensuing power play on a goal by Christian Vallance. Philp and Kemball drew assists.
Just over one minute later, Vallance potted an empty-net goal to seal the Pipers' place in provincial hockey history.
Pipers goaltender Bigourdin was named the tournament MVP. Teammates Vallance and Philp were selected as all-stars, along with Bannatyne, Zeke and Dodd of the Raiders, and the River East Kodiaks' Tyler MacPherson.
