Sports in brief

Despite 15 aces, Canada’s Milos Raonic fell to Spain’s David Ferrer in the semifinals of the Barcelona Open on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Thornhill, Ont., native lost 7-6(2), 7-6(5) to the world’s sixth-ranked tennis player a day after knocking off fourth-ranked Andy Murray of Scotland.

Ferrer won for the fourth consecutive time against Raonic, this time after just over two hours of play on the clay.

Ferrer, one of the world’s best clay court players, took advantage of several errors committed by Raonic, who was nearly perfect against Murray.

Despite the loss, Raonic should receive a new career-high ranking today, improving on his No. 25 placing. He is scheduled to next see action in two weeks at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi of Belarus also lost their semifinal match Saturday in Barcelona on Saturday. They fell 6-3, 0-6, 10-6 to the Polish team of Mariusz Frystenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

Power storms to pole

at Sao Paulo 300

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Two-time race winner Will Power edged defending IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti to win the pole position for today’s Sao Paulo 300.

Power had a lap of 1 minute, 21.4045 seconds on the 2.5-mile, 11-turn Anhembi circuit on the streets of South America’s biggest city, less than half a tenth of a second ahead of Franchitti. Scott Dixon, Franchitti’s Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, will start third.

It was Power’s second pole of the season and second consecutive in Sao Paulo. His lap on Saturday eclipsed the previous qualifying record at the track.

"It was a good run," Power said. "They were telling me it was going to be close. We’re just giving ourselves the best opportunity for the first corner."

Power is trying to win his third straight race in Sao Paulo. The Australian also won the last two races heading into Brazil and is the series points leader. He will try to give Penske its fourth straight win to start the season for the first time in team history in IndyCar. The team has won every pole this year.

Henderson, Edgar

on collision course

TORONTO — The UFC is headed to Denver’s Pepsi Center for UFC 150 this summer with reports pointing to a main event rematch between lightweight champion Benson (Smooth) Henderson and Frankie (The Answer) Edgar.

Henderson dethroned Edgar via decision when they met at UFC 144 in February in Japan.

The UFC has confirmed the Aug. 11 date but not the main event.

It has announced two bouts for the show in Denver, which was home to UFC 1 and 2 as well as 135.

Brazilian Luiz Cane, dropping down from light-heavyweight, will make his middleweight debut against Japan’s Yushin (Thunder) Okami.

And Brazilian lightweight Thiago Tavares will meet Dennis (Superman) Hallman.
